Breath of Heaven – Amy Grant

In this song, Mary is about to give birth and is contemplating her role in God’s greater story. She is just a teenager, and while nine months ago she obediently said “be it unto me, Lord, according to your word”, and months later sang fervently with Elizabeth in a song of rejoicing over their coming children, in this song, she is hesitant. This song is not in the Bible, but portrays Mary at the time that the enormity of her situation descends on her. The question in her heart is “will I be ready?” As we know now, she was.

Lyrics courtesy of LyricsDomain:

I have traveled
Many moonless night
Cold and Weary
With a babe inside
And I wonder
What I’ve done
Holy Father
You have come
Chosen me now
To carry your son

I am waiting
in a silent prayer
I am frightened
by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone
Be with me now
Be with me now

Breath of Heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of Heaven

Breath of Heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you’re holy Breath of Heaven

Do you wonder
As you watch my face
If a wiser one, should of had my place
But I offer-all I am
For the mercy-of your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be
Help me

Breath of Heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of Heaven

Breath of Heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you’re holy Breath of Heaven

Joseph’s Lullaby – Mercy Me

Christmas is filled with songs of Mary and Jesus – but what of Joseph? Poor Joseph is usually forgotten, upstaged by God as the father of Christ. But Joseph had a part to play in the Christmas story – being the earthly father that loved Jesus and wanted the best for him. He was also a model for our current relationship with God, because we also have earthly fathers as well as God THE father.

In this beautiful song by Mercy Me, Joseph finally gets to tell his story. In it, he seems to know the things that await his son when he grows up, but says to not think about all of that right now. For now, dear child, just sleep.

Lyrics courtesy of Metrolyrics:

Go to sleep my Son
This manger for your bed
You have a long road before You
Rest Your little head

Can You feel the weight of Your glory?
Do You understand the price?
Or does the Father guard Your heart for now
So You can sleep tonight?

Go to sleep my Son
Go and chase Your dreams
This world can wait for one more moment
Go and sleep in peace

I believe the glory of Heaven
Is lying in my arms tonight
But Lord, I ask that He for just this moment
Simply be my child

Go to sleep my Son
Baby, close Your eyes
Soon enough You’ll save the day
But for now, dear Child of mine
Oh my Jesus, Sleep tight

Joy To The World – Hillsong

Joy To The World is a favorite Christmas song, invoking the heavenly chorus of angels and inviting us mere humans along for the ride. Here, it has a rock twist but retains the exhuberance rather than becoming harsh. This is a song for a party – the greatest one of all.
